What to Unpack First in Your New Mill Creek Home

Moving can be rough and complicated for many Mill Creek renters. But one way to make it a bit easier is to create a strategy for unpacking. To keep the process of unpacking bearable, break it down into several smaller steps. By identifying what to unpack first when you move in, you can make sure that essential items are available when you need them.

Developing a good strategy for unpacking begins well before moving day. A method to making moving day easier is to create an essentials box. This is a box of items that you will need for your first night in your new home. If several people reside in your house, create an essentials box for each person. Make sure that your essentials box is clearly labeled and placed in a location that will make it easy to find. In this way, you will have important personal items on hand without needing to sort through lots of boxes to find things.

The next important step to stress-free unpacking happens during the move-in process. It would be wise and efficient to place each item in the correct room when bringing furniture and boxes over to the new house. This will save you a lot of time in setting things up. One great approach is to label, number or color-code your boxes to make them easy to identify. Give each room a name, number, or color, and mark the boxes that belong to that room. As a result, everyone helping with the move can help you sort your boxes and furniture into the rooms where they belong, saving you a lot of time and frantic searching later on.

After sorting the boxes, your next step is to prioritize which rooms and items should be unpacked first. The first day should be spent on focusing on assembling beds, unpacking sheets, and bedding, and unpacking some of your most frequently used items. People usually use the kitchen and bathroom most often, so it makes sense to start with these rooms. Bedrooms are another space relatively high on the priority list, and the rest of the rooms in the house follow after.

If there are items that need to be used immediately, start unpacking them first. Being able to find clean towels and dishes can make moving in seem a little less chaotic. Your hygiene items, important papers, computers, charging cords, and cleaning supplies should be at the top of the list of items to immediately sort out. Lower priority items might consist of books, home décor, or collectibles. Unpack these items once you have the higher-priority rooms all set.

When you’ve come to choose an unpacking order, you will then need to create a schedule. Depending on how much time you have and how much stuff you need to unpack, it may take several days or even weeks to place all of your items where you want them. A great option is to focus on one room at a time, making sure to unpack everything in that room before moving on to the next. By planning out a realistic schedule, you can make the entire process more manageable.

Moving into your new home with an unpacking plan in mind makes the entire process more manageable. Before you even know it, you’ve already settled in.
